Stem Cell Therapy For Feet & Ankles

STEM CELL THERAPY FOR FEET & ANKLES DESCRIPTION

Stem cell injections can help provide long-term relief for foot and ankle pain. Stem cell therapy may be effective for patients with tendon injuries, ligament damage, and degenerative diseases like arthritis. These types of injuries can lead to chronic, debilitating pain. Stem cell treatment can reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and improve foot or ankle stability without the need for invasive surgery or lengthy recovery. Stem cell therapy utilizes your body’s mesenchymal stem cells and platelet rich plasma (PRP) to help encourage healing. Stem cells are extracted from adipose tissue (the layer of fat beneath your skin), while PRP is taken from a blood sample. The stem cells and PRP are then combined to form a mixture that is injected into the foot or ankle.

STEM CELL THERAPY FOR FEET & ANKLES PROCEDURE

Stem cell therapy is a minimally invasive procedure that requires local anesthesia. First, liposuction is used to collect your mesenchymal stem cells. Tiny cannulas are inserted beneath the skin through small incisions and stem cell rich-fat is extracted from a donor area (such as the midsection or thighs). Next, your stem cells are spun through a centrifuge and purified. Platelet rich plasma is then taken from a blood sample and combined with your mesenchymal stem cells to form a mixture. This mixture is injected into the foot or ankle to encourage your body’s natural healing response.

Slight bruising or swelling may occur around the donor area and treatment area following your stem cell injection; these side effects should subside within a few days. You can typically resume most of your daily activities after a couple of days, but strenuous movements should be avoided for a few weeks to allow for proper healing. Light stretching of the foot or ankle is recommended during recovery to help maintain mobility.

WHAT TYPE OF STEM CELLS WILL BE USED DURING MY PROCEDURE?

We use stem cells taken from adipose tissue (more commonly known as fat) during treatment. While it is possible to collect stem cells from blood and bone marrow, scientific studies have shown that the greatest abundance of stem cells come from adipose tissue. Bassin Center For Plastic Surgery does not use pre-packaged or pre-processed stem cells or growth factors. By definition, stem cell treatments are indicative of a patient’s own tissue.
