Stem Cell Therapy For Knees
STEM CELL THERAPY FOR KNEES DESCRIPTION
Stem cell knee injections can help repair damage to the knee joint with less downtime than traditional knee surgery. Stem cell therapy utilizes the body’s own healing factors to help reduce knee pain and restore proper range of motion. Stem cell knee repair combines two innovative treatment methods: stem cell therapy and platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment. First, mesenchymal stem cells are taken from the layer of fat just below your skin (known as adipose tissue). These stem cells are then combined with platelet rich plasma and injected into the knee joint to promote healing. Stem cell therapy may help patients suffering from knee joint damage, as well as degenerative knee disorders, such as arthritis. Unlike knee replacement surgery, which involves removing the knee joint and replacing it with an artificial prosthesis, stem cell knee injections focus on promoting the regeneration of the natural knee joint to reduce pain and discomfort.
STEM CELL THERAPY FOR KNEES PROCEDURE
Stem cell knee repair is a minimally invasive treatment that is performed under local anesthesia. During stem cell therapy, mesenchymal stem cells are extracted from your body’s natural fat (known as adipose tissue) through liposuction. Tiny incisions are made in the skin and small cannulas are inserted below the skin to extract stem cell rich-fat from a donor area (typically the midsection or thighs). These stem cells are spun through a centrifuge and purified. The purified stem cells are then combined with platelet rich plasma taken from a blood sample. Together, your mesenchymal stem cells and PRP are injected into the knee to help stimulate your body’s natural healing response.
Slight bruising or swelling may occur around the donor area and treatment area following stem cell treatment; these side effects should subside within days. Patients can typically resume most daily activities after a few days. You should refrain from strenuous physical activities for a few weeks following your stem cell knee injection to ensure proper healing. Light stretching of the knee is encouraged after your stem cell therapy to promote mobility.
WHAT TYPE OF STEM CELLS WILL BE USED FOR MY TREATMENT?
We do not use any pre-packaged or pre-processed stem cells or growth factors. Stem cell treatments are, by definition, indicative of a patient’s own tissue. While stem cells can be taken from bone marrow and blood, it has been scientifically proven that the greatest abundance of stem cells comes from adipose tissue (also known as fat).
